St. David's is owned by Lakeshore Healthcare Ltd. which is a family run company dedicated solely to operating St. David's Nursing Home. The building is a mainly purpose built to modern standards with many ensuite rooms, wide corridors and doorways, a high ceilinged dining room, a quiet room and two lounges.

However, staff fully understood the need for consent and gained this when assisting people. There was a lack of recorded systems in place to monitor and assess the quality of the service being delivered. Whilst the manager carried out a yearly quality assurance audit, there was nothing formally recorded to demonstrate that the manager regularly audited all areas of the service. We recommend that the manager implements formal systems to monitor and assess the quality of service being delivered.

Inspection ratings
We saw that staff knew the people they were supporting and that the people receiving the care and support were happy. We noted that if something was not right that staff responded quickly to resolve matters. People we spoke with said that staff treated them with respect and consideration.
The site’s 4 million visitors a year comprise roughly 45% older people, 45% younger family and relatives, and 10% professionals who work with older people. There were enough qualified skilled and experienced staff to meet people's needs. There were occasional shifts when staff were one person short, however the manager made sure that the staff were supported by additional bank staff who regularly worked with people at the service. We had received some concerns regarding the service and because of these we followed up with an unannounced inspection to the service. We spoke with nine people in private who lived at St David's, seven members of staff, the manager, one visitor and the local authority stakeholder team. People using the service that we spoke with said, or indicated to us, that the care and support provided of good quality.
St Nicholas Care Home
From our observations we saw that care and support, both personal and medical, was effective and consistent. People’s needs were assessed by staff and care and support was planned and delivered in line with their individual care plans. The care plans we looked at were personalised and detailed and provided a good level of information for the staff providing the care. The service encouraged people to maintain relationships with those important to them and visitors could visit at any time. A room with en-suite facilities was available to family members if required. The service provided activities but these were limited and did not always meet people’s individual needs.

New staff were undergoing the Care Certificate and had received a training session on emergency procedures within the home. Staff demonstrated that the training they had received was reflected in the way they cared and supported people. Steps had been taken to reduce people’s individual risks and people’s care plans and risk assessments were reviewed and updated on a regular basis. Action had been taken to mitigate and manage environmental risks and the utilities such as gas, electricity and fire safety were monitored and maintained. Quality Location - St. David's is set in peaceful surroundings with extensive grounds offering many places to sit or stroll through beautifully-maintained gardens. Both inside and out, St. David's is designed and furnished to provide a pleasant living environment in which to enjoy the quality care for those who choose to stay with us.

We have a Chapel on site to cater for religious needs and have two services a week for the residents and wider community.

People’s independence was promoted and choice and privacy were respected. Staff respected people’s dignity and understood the importance of it. Staff understood the principles of the Mental Capacity Act and knew how to communicate with people according to their individual need so they could offer people choices about their care and treatment. Appropriate applications had been made to deprive people of their liberty to the relevant authorising authority. It is a 10 minute walk to the center of Sheringham and the Bittern Line train station which runs regular service between Sheringham, Cromer, North Walsham and Norwich.
When people were asked about the quality of the service they gave us comments and opinions that were positive. Where practicable people were supported to be as independent as possible. Most retirement developments offer either properties for sale or for rent, but newer ones may offer both tenure options, and possibly shared ownership too. Care Quality Commission monitors the operation of the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards which applies to all care services. At the time of the inspection no applications had needed to be submitted. Proper policies and procedures were in place so that people who could not make decisions for themselves were protected. Relevant staff had been trained to understand when a DoLS application should be made, and how to submit one. Risk assessments were in place to ensure that as far as reasonably practicable people were safe in the home and that staff were safe in their working environment. Where risks to people had been identified measures had been taken to minimise or remove them.
Care homes are regulated by independent Inspectorates in each country of the UK, subject to periodic inspections and awarded quality grades. EAC Advice is a free, specialist and independent telephone advice service provide by the charity Elderly Accommodation Counsel . As with hotels, the cost of living in a care home varies widely according to its location, the size of your room or suite, and the facilities on offer. There is often a substantial difference between fees charged to those who can afford the costs themselves and those who receive help from their Local Authority.
Safe
All our residents have their care needs assessed prior to admission in order to develop a personal care plan which our registered nurses regularly review and update. You can read more about our approach in the Quality Assurance section. St. David’s provides high quality residential nursing care as a short term bookable respite stay or long term care. EAC sees itself, and this website, as one source of ‘housing options’ information and advice for older people and their families. But there are many other organisations providing valuable services, both locally and nationally. Care services offered to people in housing-with-care facilities are regulated, subject to periodic inspections and awarded grades.
We saw some people walking in the garden, while others preferred to stay in their rooms. Staff were seen popping in to speak to people on their own and check they had things within reach. The manager made available all the records we asked to see during our visit. People told us, or indicated to us, that they liked living at St David's and that staff were kind and caring. Staff demonstrated kindness and compassion when assisting people and interacting with each other.
